The whelk is a sea snail from the family Buccinidae that has elegantly spiraled shells and, when properly cooked, tender and succulent meat. It's popular in Europe, where it is commonly served at seaside stands in Britain, on seafood platters at brasseries in France (where it's known as bourgot ), and in pasta dishes and salads in Italy (where the larger varieties are called scungilli ).

Feeding and diet The Sydney Rock Whelk selectively feeds on the Cunjevoi's gonads (reproductive organs) and reaches them by inserting its long mouthparts down one of the siphons or feeding tubes of the Cunjevoi. Dog whelks have a conical shell with a pointed spire. They predominantly have white shells in the UK, but may be brown or yellow. The dog whelk is smaller than the common whelk, smoother than the netted whelk and more rounded than the oyster drill. The animal itself is white or cream coloured but rarely seen.
